Maxphalte® Stone Mastic Asphalt
Maxphalte is Northstone’s proprietary stone mastic asphalt surfacing. It is based on German technology and experience, where it has been used for well over 30 years.
Maxphalte's unique properties derive from an interlocking high stone content skeleton, bound together by a binder rich, heavy duty mortar, reinforced with Shell's Cariphalte TS® modified binder which has styrene butadiene styrene (SBS) as the co-polymer. The resulting matrix offers greater deformation, fatigue and ageing-resistance compared to other asphalt surfacing materials.
Laid using a conventional paver, pre-coated chippings are not required. Consequently, the one-stage process means that surfacing can be carried out quickly and safely, with traffic disruption kept to a minimum.
Available in 0/10mm or 0/14mm nominal aggregate sizes, Maxphalte can be tailored to meet all skid-resistant requirements through a combination of a negatively textured surface and the use of high PSV aggregates. The resulting material provides a smooth, quiet running surface with excellent riding quality.
Maxphalte is:
- Durable – consists of high quality aggregates and binder rich mortar
- Deformation resistant – derived from interlocking stone skeleton
- Skid resistant – employs high PSV aggregates where specified
- Safe and quick to lay – minimises traffic disruption
- Quiet – generates up to 25% less tyre noise levels compared to hot rolled asphalt
- Our Cariphalte TS® grade is covered by BBA/HAPAS Certificate No. 03/H085 for Maxphalte 14mm Stone Mastic
